In Ghosts of the New City, Andrew Alan Johnson shows how the trauma of the crash, brought back vividly by the political crisis of 2006, haunts efforts to remake the city. For many Chiang Mai residents, new developments harbor the seeds of the crash, which manifest themselves in anxious stories of ghosts and criminals who conceal themselves behind the city’s progressive veneer. Hopes for rebirth and fears of decline have their roots in Thai conceptions of progress, which draw from Buddhist and animist ideas of power and sacrality. Cities, Johnson argues, were centers where the charismatic power of kings and animist spirits were grounded; these entities assured progress by imbuing the space with sacred power that would avert disaster. Johnson traces such magico-religious conceptions of potency and space from historical records through present-day popular religious practice and draws parallels between these and secular attempts at urban revitalization. Through a detailed ethnography of the contested ways in which academics, urban activists, spirit mediums, and architects seek to revitalize the flagging economy and infrastructure of Chiang Mai, Johnson finds that alongside the hope for progress there exists a discourse about urban ghosts, deadly construction sites, and the lurking anxiety of another possible crash, a discourse that calls into question history’s upward trajectory. In this way, Ghosts of the New City draws new connections between urban history and popular religion that have implications far beyond Southeast Asia.

Und diese sieben Jahrhunderte haben gereicht, um der Welt einen einmaligen Schatz zu hinterlassen. Riesige Tempelanlagen mitten im Urwald mit einzigartiger Architektur. Wunderschöne Skulpturen und Reliefs. Und nicht zuletzt auch Inschriften und Texte, die die Mythen und die Geschichte der Khmer erläutern und für uns heute nachvollziehbar machen. Vieles wurde dabei aus der indischen Kultur im Westen des Landes übernommen. Aber während man auf der einen Seite treu zu den Überlieferungen blieb, haben es die Khmer dennoch geschafft, einen eigenen Stil, eine eigene Ästhetik zu entwickeln, die heute noch in den manchmal gut erhaltenen, manchmal auch verfallenen Bauten weiterlebt.

Dieser Bildband ist von Autoren geschrieben, denen man sowohl die Begeisterung für diese Kultur als auch die jahrelange Beschäftigung mit dem Thema anmerkt. Der Band erschien schon 1990 und umfasst praktisch alle Erkenntnisse, die man zu diesem Zeitpunkt über die Khmer hatte. Praktisch alle größeren, noch erhaltenen Bauwerke sind in dem Band dokumentiert. Und dies geschah sogar zu einer Zeit, als der Konflikt zwischen der Regierung Kambodschas und den Roten Khmer noch im Gang war und die Substanz der Gebäude wie auch den Photografen gefährdete. Das unter diesen Umständen so gute Photos entstanden sind, ist wirklich eine Leistung. Dazu gibt es dann noch eine Geschichte der Khmer, eine Zeittafel und Informationen zur Kultur und Lebensweise.

Schön ist, dass die Bilder noch durch schematische Übersichten der Gebäude, Wasserbecken und Kanäle und der Siedlungen ergänzt werden. So erhält man einen deutlich besseren Eindruck von der Architektur als von den Bildern allein. Was auf den Bildern oft chaotisch, scheinbar zufällig erscheint, erweist sich auf den Plänen als ausgefeilt, als bis ins letzte durchkomponiert. Hier können andere Autoren wirklich etwas lernen.

Für mich ist das einer der schönsten Bände meiner kleinen Bibliothek zu Hause. Ja, der Band ist teuer, aber ich glaube, das Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis ist hier wirklich in Ordnung. Lieber ein wirklich gutes Buch über das Thema als drei schlechte. Das Buch ist auf schönem Papier gedruckt, hat ein leichtes Querformat, ist gut gebunden. Eine Seite fällt im Kontrast etwas ab, dass mag aber ein individueller Fehldruck in meinem Exemplar sein. Sonst ist wirklich jede Seite für sich schön. Ich kann das Buch nur empfehlen.

Im Gegensatz zu Livia würde ich allerdings nicht dazu raten, das Buch "unter dem Arm" nach Siem Reap mitzunehmen. Der Band misst immerhin 27,5 mal 29 cm und dürfte ein bis zwei Kilo wiegen. Als Reiseführer bietet sich daher etwas tragbares an, zumal auch das Klima vor Ort dem schönen Band nicht immer gut bekommen wird.
