Phum, a 20-year-old who was sentenced to a juvenile correctional facility for lese-majeste after throwing dog food at the King's portrait when he was 17 years old, will continue to be detained at the facility after the Central Juvenile and Family Court denied his parents' appeal against the decision to detain him for one year.
The court said his actions during a protest at Khlong Luang Police Station on January 14, 2021, had upset Thai people who respect the monarch, and it could be considered as royal defamation. He was charged with lese-majeste, illegal gathering, violation of the emergency decree to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and insulting officials.
Including Phum, there are now 14 people incarcerated for lese-majeste, according to the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR). Of these cases, three have been finalized, including Anchan, a 66-year-old who is currently serving a prison sentence of 43 years and six months for her charges.
