Three Women of Annan

Three Women of Annan (Englisch) Taschenbuch – 2018
von Clofhulde Chivas-Baron (Autor)

 Produktbeschreibungen

Chivas-Baron, Clofhulde; Three Women of Annan : Womanhood in 1920S Vietnam .-.-.-.-.-.-.-. Three Women of Annam. Womanhood in 1920s Vietnam was written by a French feminist of the early hours. She tells the story of three local women, contrasting their destinies as they belonged to different social strata. They are the daughter of a high-placed official called against her will to the imperial palace, a peasant woman ending in a city sweatshop due to the usury of a Chinese shop-keeper, and a so-called congaie, an indigenous woman in consecutive relationships with French colonial officials. The last of these women lives the most precarious, although intermittently rich, life. In status barely beyond life on the streets as a prostitute, she often has mixed-breed offspring that suffer a discrimination that perpetuates the near-abhorence of Asians for the foreign devils. The migrant to the city is tempted by the luxury associated with being a Frenchman’s local wife. The noble woman’s life, while in appearance the least difficult, has its own problems as a satisfactory emotional life escapes her in the face of absolute power. Prominent is the inner debate women have to conduct when confronted with the possibility of joining French wealth in the face of their own Annamese poverty. The destinies are plotted into timeless love-stories, happy-end included. In passing, the author offers glimpses of the daily life of French colonials, colonial delights such as opium, the pervasive role of Vietnamese ancestor worship, the stigma of a childless marriage, second wives, and the populace’s fears and superstitions, in a Vietnam occupied by the French.

The Ecomic Condition of North-Eastern Siam

The Ecomic Condition of North-Eastern Siam (1929) Taschenbuch – 2018
von Ministry of Commerce and Communication (Autor, Illustrator)

Produktbeschreibungen

Lefferts, Leedom; The Ecomic Condition of North-Eastern Siam (1929) : Ministry of Commerce and Communication .-.-.-.-.-.-.- The Economic Conditions of North-Eastern Siam is the report of the first economic survey of Isan, conducted by Reginald Stuart Le May in 1929. Prior to 1929, not much was known of neglected Northeast Siam, previously called Laos. The population, almost 4 million, 1/3rd of the Kingdom’s, was primarily ethnically Lao and Khmer. Le May’s work, the result of provincial-level questionnaires, provides foundational knowledge of the contours of economic life in this neglected region just as Siam’s 1932 constitutional revolution took place. Leedom Lefferts wrote the introduction and compares the work with Carle C. Zimmermann’s Siam: Rural Economic Survey 1930-1931 (Available as a White Lotus Press reprint).

Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfection (Lonely Planet Pictorial)

Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfection (Lonely Planet Pictorial) (Englisch) Gebundenes Buch – 25. Oktober 2001
von Bill Wassman (Autor, Fotograf), Joe Cummings (Autor), Robert Thurman (Vorwort)

Lavishly illustrated with full-colour photographs, this book is a pictorial that explores the spread of Buddhism and stupa building across Asia and India. Attempts to encapsulate the durable appeal of the stupa - one of the oldest religious symbols still in use - collide with the vast and varied history of stupa building.
When the Buddha was dying, he instructed his followers to cremate his body and enclose his remains inside four separate monuments or "stupa-mounds." These manmade "axial mountains" became the prototype for the monuments that are so beautifully presented in Joe Cummings's Buddhist Stupas in Asia. Each spread features full-color illustrations or photographs, depicting the varying shapes, designs, and scale of this holy architecture. "People in all the different cultures that have discovered Buddhism seem to have gone crazy with joy, building stupas by the millions," writes Cummings, whose other Lonely Planet titles cover Thailand and Bangkok. "[They are] more than funeral reliquaries. They are memorials, rather, to the immanent possibility of freedom from suffering for all beings." Ten pages of transparent architectural overlays explain how the sacred meets function. This is entertaining learning at its best--a book that's loaded with knowledge, yet packaged with visual appeal.

Pagodas, Gods and Spirits of Vietnam: Popular Religion, Sacred Buildings and Religious Art in Vietnam

Pagodas, Gods and Spirits of Vietnam: Popular Religion, Sacred Buildings and Religious Art in Vietnam
(Englisch) Gebundenes Buch – 1. September 1997
von Ann Helen Unger (Autor), Walter Unger (Autor)

This book reveals through text and illustrations the extraordinarily varied and prolific religions of Vietnam. Despite decades of government discouragement of all religion, the deeply anchored faiths of the Vietnamese people have continued to flourish, and indeed to increase their hold on believers. Everywhere between the Red River in the north and the Mekong Delta in the south, sacrificial offerings are heaped upon altars, hundreds of thousands of the faithful stream again on pilgrimages, and there is a regular increase in the request- and thanksgiving-rites in the chuas, dinhs, and dens, the pagodas, village ceremony halls, and hero temples all over the land. In most guide books, Vietnam is described as a Buddhist country; but in contrast to their neighbors in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, the Vietnamese follow a Buddhism that is far from pure. The faith and its teachings were taken over from India about 2,000 years ago, but Vietnamese Buddhism was mingled with more ancient indigenous ancestor cults and spirit beliefs suitable to local customs and needs. Other strains were also absorbed: elements of Hinduism as well as the teachings of Confucius and Taoism. The text by Ann Unger admirably explains this complex situation and shows how the great number of beautiful, serene religious buildings throughout the country reflect the multiple strands of the country's religious fabric. Walter Unger's arresting photographs document the architectural splendor of the buildings as well as the worshipers in a ground-breaking reportage of a country that for so long has been hidden from the rest of the world.

Worshipping the Great Moderniser: King Chulalongkorn, Patron Saint of the Thai Middle Class

Worshipping the Great Moderniser: King Chulalongkorn, Patron Saint of the Thai Middle Class (Englisch) Taschenbuch – 15. August 2009
von Irene Stengs (Autor)

In Thailand the globalising urban culture associated with the economic boom of the 1980s and 1990s gave rise to an alienating anomie. In the slipstream of this boom, an immense cult took shape around King Chulalongkorn the Great (r. 1868-1910) that reworked the idea of Buddhist kingship, making it the pivot of the modern Thai social cosmos and creating a new foundation for Thai identity. ""Worshipping the Great Moderniser"" explores the contemporary appeal of King Chulalongkorn and considers what this ruler's unprecedented popularity says about present-day Thai society. Arguing that the exalted expectations of modern Buddhist kingship are a product of the ambitions and anxieties of Thailand's expanding middle class, Irene Stengs compares the popular image of King Chulalongkorn with that of the present king, the highly venerated King Bhumibol Adulyadej to show that while modern Buddhist kingship and current ideas of Thainess draw on traditional idioms, they are highly modern. This examination of the social imaginary surrounding Thai kingship and Thainess during the past century and a half yields an intriguing amalgam of ideas concerning popular religion, Buddhist kingship, nationalism, and material culture.

One Man's View of the World

One Man's View of the World (Englisch) Taschenbuch – 2013
von LEE KUAN YEW (Autor)

 Produktbeschreibungen

Born in 1923, Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has spent a lifetime being intimately involved in international affairs. He has met every major Chinese leader from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping and hobnobbed with American presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Barack Obama. In this book, Lee draws on that wealth of experience and depth of insight to offer his views on today's world and what it might look like in 20 years. This is no dry geopolitical treatise. Nor is it a thematic account of the twists and turns in global affairs. Instead, in this broad-sweep narrative that takes in America, China, Asia and Europe, he parses their society, probes the psyche of the people and draws his conclusions about their chances for survival and just where they might land in the hierarchy of tomorrow's balance of power. What makes a society tick? What do its people really believe? Can it adapt? In spare, unflinching prose that eschews political correctness, he describes a China that remains obsessed with control from the centre on its way to an unstoppable rise; an America that will have to share its pre-eminence despite its never-say-die dynamism; and a Europe that struggles with the challenges of keeping its union intact. His candid and often startling views - on why Japan is closed to foreigners, why the Arab Spring won't bring one man, one vote to the Middle East, and why preventing global warming is not going to be as fruitful as preparing for it - make this a fresh and gripping read. Lee completes the book by looking into the future of Singapore - his enduring concern - and by offering the reader a glimpse into his personal life and his view of death. The book is interspersed with a Q&A section in each chapter, gleaned from conversations he had with journalists from The Straits Times.

"Having lived in and traveled to most parts of Laos over the past thirty years, I find this publication truly representative of the beautiful landscapes, peoples, and festivals of Laos. The photographs and commentary in this book offer us an intriguing insight into the cultural tapestry of Laos. Never before have I seen Lao festivals depicted so comprehensively.
