Georg Friedrich Händel was the first composing international superstar. For centuries, his Italian operatic masterpieces were eclipsed by the huge popularity of Messiah and other choral works, but today we are rediscovering what a supreme artist of the theatre he was — and coming to understand the operatic nature of his oratorios as well.

Bangkok Opera has been a regional leader in the baroque revival, and its resident chorus, the Orpheus Choir, was the first in Thailand to perform the virtuoso Dixit Dominus.

In 2009, the world commemorates the 250th annivesary of Handel's death (and the 200th annivesary of Haydn's) with a "Handel and Haydn Year."  The Bangkok Opera will kick off the year with a HANDEL GALA to be held at the Thailand Cultural Center (Small Hall) on February 19, at 8 pm, and - for those living further from the city centre - at the Thailand Science Park Convention Center, Pathum Thani, on February 20th.  At the Science Park, there will be an opening reception at 7 pm.  The site has a fine restaurant and coffee bar/bakery.

Nancy Yuen will perform scenes from Giulio Cesare, which she first sang under famed early music guru Trevor Pinnock.  Canadian tenor Derek Kwan, local opera singers Pitchaya Kemasingki, Zion Daoratanahong, and countertenor Jak Cholvijaen will be among the participants.

Tickets for both events are 500 baht, 800 for VIP seating, and 300 for students with valid student I.D.  Reserve tickets by emailing tickets@bangkokopera.com, or by phoning (089) 454-9223 on weekdays.  Tickets will also be available at the door.

P. S.: What other composers said about Handel:

"Handel is the only person in the world I would want to be were I not Bach." — J.S. Bach

"the greatest composer who ever lived" — Beethoven

The Bangkok Opera continues its celebration of the year of Haydn and Handel with a recital by Trisdee na Patalung on piano and harpsichord.

Trisdee is one of Thailand’s most prominent young musicians and the most visible Thai proponent of early music, having played and conducted the music of Monteverdi, Charpentier, Marin Marais, and Handel in the musical centres of Europe. This year, he has been selected as the young conductor of the year at the Pesaro Festival in Italy and will be conducting Rossini’s Viaggio a Rheims in Rossini’s birthplace. Previous conductors at the festival have included such superstars as Claudio Abbado.

Trisdee has had a very special relationship with the music of both Haydn and Handel and he will play his favorite pieces by the two composers, including The Harmonious Blacksmith and the harmonically daring A flat major piano sonata by Haydn. The two composers, both from the German-speaking world, who both rose to prominence in London, are icons of their respective epochs, the baroque and the classical.

This year the Bangkok Opera provides two convenient venues for most of its events. The Saturday tea-time concert in the Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thai province gives the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing afternoon which can start with a pleasant glass of wine and be followed by a buffet or sit-down dinner in one of the convention centre’s restaurants. For Bangkok residents, a shuttle will be provided from a major Bangkok meeting spot. To ensure a shuttle ride, please pre-book the shuttle by calling (02) 564-7170 (press 1)and stating that you are coming to the Bangkok Opera’s concert.

Wednesday the 25th, the concert is repeated at the more familiar Goethe Institut at 8 pm.
