“The dissolution of Thai Raksa Chart: Rule of law & Political rights"
Friday 1 March 19, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. @ Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT)
After the Election Commission recommended, on 13 Feb., that the Constitutional Court dissolve the Thai Raksa Chart Party (TRC) for Nominating Princess Ubolratana to be its prime ministerial candidate, Thailand is again under an uncertainty prior to the long-delayed election. Since then, the development of the political context includes efforts to also lead to the ban of a few other political parties. Questions about the civil and political rights arise as well as those about the Rule of Law and standards in its application, imposing challenges to the free, fair and meaningful election.
As the verdict is expected to be given in March, we will fruitfully explore key critical and controversial issues around the Party dissolution and its implication to Thailand’s road to democracy. The panel will be joined by;
Assoc. Prof. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a former Election Commissioner
Asst. Prof. Sawatree Suksri, Faculty of Law, Thammasat University
Sunai Phasuk, Human Rights Watch (Thailand)
Winyat Chatmontree, United Lawyers for Rights & Liberty
Nuttaa Mahattana, Civil rights activist (Moderator)
This is a public forum.
Thai-English translation with headsets will be provided.
