Synopsis : King of the waters describes how a brilliant Dutch engineer ultimately failed to implement his plans for modern irrigation in Siam. Homan van der Heide’s identification with the interests of the rice farmers caused ambivalent reactions from his Siamese environment. Interwoven with the detailed description of the actions of the Dutch engineer, King Chulalongkorn and some of his ministers is the ambiguous performance of the Siamese state towards agriculture in the first decade of the twentieth century. The book shows the weight of many contingencies in state affairs, especially through the problematical interactions between the engineer Homan van der Heide and the minister of Agriculture, chao phraya Thewet — they seemed to form a kind of jolie ? deux. King of the waters sketches a dramatic picture of clashing cultures, comparable to many encounters in contemporary development cooperation. The study is based on arhival material in the National Archives in Bangkok and documents available in the Netherlands. Han ten Brummelhuis is an anthropologist at the University of Amsterdam. His work concentrates on Southeast Asia,especially Thailand and Burma.

Das Buch mit dem Titel, Der lächelnde Elefant in der Rushhour. In diesem Buch, handelt es sich um eine Mogelpackung, die vom Titel des Buches herrührte. Das Buch ist im Prinzip schon sehr lesenswert, nur es hat sehr wenig damit zu tun was man so unter dem Titel versteht. Das Buch handelt Bangkok und Elefanten recht zügig ab und schweift dann sehr schnell in die Region um Chiang mai. Leider werden mache interessante Kapitel zu schnell und zu kurz abgehandelt, sehr positiv ist aufzuführen, das das Buch auch wenn nur kurz, die verschiedenen nicht so bekannten Festtage in Thailand abhandelt, wie z.B das Kunsthandwerker-festival in Bo Sang was für mich sehr interessant war, da doch die ein oder andere Neugier entstanden ist, und ich das ein oder andere gerne selbst miterleben würde.
Das Buch ist für Leute zu empfehlen, die schon in Thailand waren, und neue interessante Möglichkeiten endecken wollen abseits der ausgetrampelten Touristenpfaden zu wandeln.

Leonowens is best known as the heroine of the musical The King and I . Less well known is that her duties at the court of the Thai king included the education of the women in the king's harem in English and Western culture. This book, originally published in 1872 and long out of print, deals with her experiences in, and perceptions of, that oddly Eastern institution, inhabited by 9000 p. xviii women and children. Roundly condemned as fiction when first published, the work is now recovered by editor Morgan ( Sisters in Time ) as a kind of fictionalized history. Written in florid prose, the stories are fabulous--grisly tales of witchcraft, bastinado and other tortures (at one point the king builds a scaffold outside Leonowens's window, ostensibly to hang a woman and her illicit lover but in fact to terrorize Leonowens, who is in conflict with him over harem policy). Such tales are out of keeping with a king who was, by the standards of the day, an enlightened Western-style monarch. Morgan tries hard to equate Leonowens's style to contemporaries like Eliot and Dickens. In the end, however, the book is perhaps best viewed as a relic of its time rather than anything of enduring value.
