Chuvit Goes UndercoverAn evening with Thailand's colourful corruption-busting MP Chuvit Kamolvisit
Thailand's inimitable ex-massage parlor tycoon turned anti-corruption crusader, Chuvit Kamolvisit, is returning to the FCCT. And he's bringing along a trove of hidden-camera videos he describes as "exciting."
Chuvit, now more than a year into his parliamentary term, has not let up on one of his signature campaign pledges: exposing wrongdoing within the Thai government and police force. Last year, his outing of an underground casino led to the transfer of six high-ranking police officers. In more recent months, he's sent out teams to record footage of traffic cops on the take.
On a recent visit to Thailand's south, where he intended to expose illicit casino operations in Hat Yai, Chuvit's entourage was attacked by a knife-wielding woman. His secretary sufferend a nasty knife wound that required 19 stitches to the head. Police have produced a doctor's certificate describing the attacker as metally unstable but uncertainties remain over the nature of the attack and whether Chuvit was the intended target.
Chuvit is perhaps best known for going public with protection money payments he doled out to high-ranking police officers while running a string of lucrative massage parlors. Those admissions, in 2003, were followed by several failed attempts to win the Bangkok governor's seat. Each campaign blanketed the Thai capital with unorthodox signage featuring Chuvit's scowling face paired with condemnations of Thailand's political system. Please join Chuvit at the FCCT to find out who he intends to expose next.
