One of Thailand's great contributions to civilization is the Khōn mask, which is representative of Siamese "high culture." Its use is perhaps best exemplified in the Thai epic, Rāmakíen, which was derived from the ancient Indic drama, Rāmāyana. The uninitiated observer would find the colorful masks, ornamentation, and intricate facial features, which denote varied characters such as demons, royals, or monkey soldiers, very difficult to decipher without the benefit of expert guidance. This fully-illustrated book does just that by portraying and describing the meaning and significance of the Khōn masks, bringing them to life in all of their glorious detail. What we find is an intricate blending of narrative poetry, epic drama, complex music, and a highly stylized interlocking system of choreography, costumes and crafted masks unknown elsewhere. This is best seen in the Khōn mask drama in its presentation of the Thai epic, the Rāmakíen. Even though the Rāmakíen ultimately derives from the Rāmāyana of ancient Indic civilization, the Thai version closely reflects Siamese civilization. In the Khōn mask drama, we find a very large cast of characters. Without guidance, the viewer would be overwhelmed. Thus, the characters must be categorized and easily identified. This is done through a coded system of costuming and intricately crafted masks. The colours of faces, the shapes of eyes and mouths, the crowns worn, the ornaments displayed, and the weapons wielded all go to show whether the character is demonic, celestial, royal, or even a monkey soldier or forest hermit. Eventually the observer will learn to associate the names of the characters and the masks they wear. Hence, the ultimate purpose of this fully illustrated book is to provide explanations of the Khōn masks as a rich contribution to world civilization.

Für mich persönlich ein Highlight, da ich ein großer Liebhaber des thailändischen Ramakiens bin, dessen Charaktere ja durch die Khon-Masken dargestellt werden. Meine Frau ist Thailänderin und ein Freund ihrer Schwester und unseres Schwagers, hat die Kunst des Khon Masken Herstellens in traditioneller Form noch erlernt, was mich natürlich sofort ermuntert hat, selbst eine kleine Sammlung dieser Masken (überwiegend Dämonenmasken), für mich, bei ihm zu bestellen. Nach und nach hatte er alle angefertigt und nun haben sie einen Ehrenplatz bei uns zuhause. Allein aus diesem Grund, ist das Buch für mich persönlich schon von sehr hohem Wert. Aber zurück zum Buch. Hier findet man alle Charaktere des Ramakiens, wenn auch nicht alle abgebildet sind, so werden doch alle kurz erwähnt und beschrieben. Das Buch ist fast durchgehend bebildert und besticht durch viele schöne Großaufnahmen der Masken, sowie zahlreichen kleineren Abbildungen. Ebenso werden die verschiedenen Arten der Kronen beschrieben, sowie die Farben der Gesichter. Alles ist sehr liebevoll gemacht. Erstmalig in englischer Sprache, wird dieses Buch, jene Leute, die Interesse an thailändischer Kunst und Mythologie haben, auch wenn es sehr teuer ist, auf jeden Fall begeistern. Großartig!!

The Enigmatic Hunter-Gatherers of Northern Thailand A colorful travel account and documentary work by the Austrian ethnographer and photographer Hugo A. Bernatzik. First published in German in 1938 under the title Die Geister der gelben Blätter it is long since out of print. This is an important work for several reasons and it is certainly worth publishing again. In the years 936‑37 Bernatzik traveled in both Southern and Northern Thailand and the southern fringe of the Shan State, with a final excursion into Vietnam. In his book he gave interesting accounts of the ethnic groups he visited, Moken, Akha, Lisu, Biet and others, all documented with outstanding photographs of lasting historical value. In the present edition additional photos from Bernatzik's collection have been added. The work now appears in two volumes. The core of the present volume is a large section on an enigmatic and notoriously shy hunter‑gatherer tribe called "the Spirits of the Yellow Leaves". This ethnic group still exists both in Thailand and Laos, though it numbers only some 300 people. It is nowadays referred to as the "Yellow‑Leaf People" or as Mlabri (Mla' Bri', literally: "forest people"). In his Introduction to the volume Jørgen Rischel places Bernatzik's intriguing account in the context of earlier and recent research. For decades there was controversy over the authenticity of his data; Rischel shows that the criticism was beside the point. Bernatzik took down a short word list in imperfect notation, which has vexed linguists ever since. Rischel has identified almost all words on the list as belonging to the language still spoken by the Mlabri. The complete analysis presented here has not been published elsewhere. It will be of particular relevance to comparative Mon‑Khmer research, but it is also of general interest since the vocabulary reflects culture and gives evidence of how this ethnic group traditionally viewed the world.

Die Weihnachtszeit gilt als Hochsaison für den Onlinehandel. Mitten im Sommer werden in den Logistikzentren von Amazon deshalb bereits Vorbereitungen getroffen.

Der US-Onlinehändler Amazon hat in seinem Logistikzentrum in Koblenz bereits mit den Weihnachtsvorbereitungen begonnen. Die Belegschaft soll in dieser Zeit fast verdoppelt werden, teilte Standortleiter Nikolai Lisac mit. Zu den regulären rund 1900 Beschäftigten sollen demnach bis zu 1500 Weihnachtsaushilfen dazukommen.

Samstag, 10.12.2016: Mitten im Weihnachtsgeschäft sind Beschäftigte des Online-Versandhauses Amazon an den Standorten Rheinberg und Werne am Samstag in Streik getreten. Damit wollten sie den Konzern "zur Aufnahme von Tarifverhandlungen zwingen", teilte die Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft Ver.di in Düsseldorf mit.

Die Gewerkschaft fordert für die rund zehntausend Mitarbeiter des US-Konzerns in Deutschland die Anerkennung des Tarifvertrags für den Einzel- und Versandhandel. Amazon lehnt Verhandlungen darüber ab. Deswegen kommt es schon seit dem Frühsommer 2013 immer wieder zu Streiks.

Erklärtes Ziel dieses Streiks ist es Ver.di zufolge, das Weihnachtsgeschäft des US-Unternehmens zu stören. Die Beschäftigten wollten die schlechten Arbeitsbedingungen und gesundheitlichen Risiken "nicht widerstandslos ertragen".

Bereits im Oktober streikten rund tausend Angestellte des Unternehmens. Auch in den vergangenen beiden Jahren war das Weihnachtsgeschäft betroffen. 2015 reagierte Amazon geradezu provokativ gelassen:

"Mal ehrlich: Wenn Glatteis ist, juckt uns das weit mehr, als wenn Ver.di zum Arbeitskampf aufruft. Es hat noch kein Paket seinen Adressaten zu spät erreicht, weil gestreikt wurde", sagte Amazon-Deutschlandchef Ralf Kleber im letzten Jahr dem "Tagesspiegel".

The book filled in the blanks on his life though I was less interested in all the theories on his disappearance, which was a substantial part of the book.
I think there is another book to be written about this fascinating character
There are photos in the book of his home and it is amazing to see that the Thais have left the house almost exactly as he left it. The Thai people hold him in high regard as he took the Thai silk industry from cottage work to the international market - an interesting read about an interesting man - just too many theories........
