Das Buch stellt in streng chronologischer Abfolge die Ereignisse im Botschaftsviertel Pekings während des Boxeraufstands 1900 dar, als sich etwa 350 Marinesoldaten verschiedener Nationalitäten (Franzosen, Deutsche, Amerikaner, Russen, Italiener, Japaner, Österreicher) über 50 Tage (20.6. - 13.08.1900) lang in verzweifeltem Kampf und unter hohen Verlusten erfolgreich gegen eine riesige Übermacht chinesischer Aufständischer und auch regulärer Einheiten der chinesischen Armee wehrten, bevor Entsatz eintraf.
Das Buch beruht auf sorgfältiger Recherche, wobei der französische Autor naturgemäß vorwiegend auf französisches Archivmaterial und Augenzeugenberichte zurückgreift, aber wohltuend um Objektivität bemüht ist.
Der Spagat zwischen einer historisch - wissenschaftlichen Abhandlung und einem spannend zu lesenden Bericht ist ihm voll und ganz gelungen. Der Leser wird zugleich gefesselt und historisch gebildet: So wünscht man sich ein gutes historisches Sachbuch.
Das Buch ist uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen. Der Untertitel ist irreführend: Es basiert zwar auf Augenzeugenberichten, ist aber als durchgängiger Text verfaßt.

Mof

Das niederländische Mof (Plural moffen; eigentliche Bedeutung Muff) ist in den Niederlanden eine abwertende Bezeichnung für einen Deutschen. Im Norden der Niederlande spricht man eher von poep. Im Süden, auf Limburgisch, sagt man pruusj (Prüsch, aus Preußen).

Das Wort mof ist im Niederländischen seit dem 16. Jahrhundert belegt (unter anderem bei Isaac Vos) und vermutlich abgeleitet von Muff und muffig. Im Deutschen Wörterbuch der Brüder Grimm wird Muff als „Spottwort der Holländer wider die Niedersachsen“ bezeichnet.

Ein anderer Erklärungsversuch: In Deutschland wurden Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts die Ostfriesen und Emsländer „Moffen“ genannt, was dann in den Niederlanden für alle Deutschen übernommen worden sein könnte.

Das Wort wurde im Westen der Niederlande vor allem seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verwendet und war in dieser Zeit ein Synonym für „Nazi“. Dementsprechend wurde eine einheimische Frau, die sich während der Besatzung mit einem deutschen Soldaten einließ, moffenmeid, moffenhoer oder moffengriet genannt.

Im 19. Jahrhundert hat sich der friesische Autor und Germanist Justus Hiddes Halbertsma (1789–1869) in einem Vortrag mit den Bezeichnungen mof und poep für Deutsche beschäftigt und die Auffassung vertreten, dass es sich nicht um Synonyme handele. Für ihn war poepen eine eher neutrale Bezeichnung mit der Hauptbedeutung ‚Fremde‘. Mof sei dagegen ein Schimpfwort. Poep bedeutet im Singular auf Niederländisch jedoch auch ‚Sch.e.iße‘ und kann daher auch negativ gemeint sein.

In the late sixteenth century, a mythical encounter was reported on an elephant hunt in the dense jungle north of the Tonle Sap, or Great Lake, of central Cambodia. King Satha of Cambodia and his retainers were beating a path through the undergrowth when they were halted by stone giants, and then a massive wall. The King, the fable reported, ordered 6,000 men to bring down the wall, thereby exposing the city of Angkor - 'lost' for over a century. Subsequent reports from Portuguese missionaries described its four gateways, with bridges flanked by stone figures leading across a moat. There were idols covered in gold, inscriptions, fountains, canals, and 'a temple with five towers, called Angor [sic]'. A detailed investigation into the dramatic demise of Ananda, the European born and educated heir to the Siamese crown. Ananda returned to Thailand in 1945, at the conclusion of WWII, at the tender age of 20, to assume his royal role, yet only six months later was discovered dead in the palace of a gunshot wound. Following a painfully extended investigation and trial, three palace aides were convicted and executed for regicide, and one of Thailand's brightest and most promising politicians, implicated in the 'crime' was driven into exile. Author Kruger, who had unprecedented access to members of the inner circle of the Thai royal family (although these contacts remain unidentified), drew the conclusion that Ananda's death was most probably an 'accidental suicide'. Thus it appears that the sad, most likely accidental, death of the young king was exploited for the purposes of a political vendetta, and that three innocent victims were executed to maintain the facade. Kruger's book was incendiary to the Thai establishment and was quickly banned in the country where it remains banned to the present day. The inexplicable rarity of the original edition implies a concerted effort, by parties unknown, to corner and destroy as many printed copies as possible. A fascinating read, of particular relevance today as royalist forces continue their struggle to dominate the direction of the country by whatever means possible.
