Watching the Thais Watching the Thais (Englisch) Taschenbuch – 10. August 2012
von Tom Tuohy (Autor)
If you are one of the fifteen million or so expected visitors to Thailand this coming year, or an expat interested in moving to the country, this book is a must for you. The book is divided into ten chapters, each one detailing some of the virtues as well as common misconceptions about living and working in Thailand. Common questions asked by visitors are also dealt with: why do Thais walk so slowly? Why do they like spicy food? Why are they always smiling? Why does nothing seem to upset them? Towards the end of the book, a series of blogs discuss deeper aspects of living and working in Thailand e.g. the state of Thai education, cross-cultural communication, the Thai floods, marriage to a Thai, and the way the Thai riots in 2010 were presented by the foreign media. If you are planning to spend any length of time in the country and really want to understand the Thai modus operandi, this book will give you a great insight into the uniquely Thai way of thinking and being.

This is my first attempt at reviewing a book I've read, made easy I must say, because it's excellent, and a 'must' read for anyone living, or considering living here in Thailand!
Having lived here for a few years now, I'm nothing if not happy with my lot, I'm very glad to say, and a lot of that is down to digging around, and finding out about my Thai hosts, their language and customs, and then taking due note! After all, I'm the guest in a foreign country, not the Thai people! Experience apart , my research and reading have played a large part in this, rather than listening to the "Embittered Rons" on their 5th Singha down at the "Gop and Whistle", who've been here 20 years, hate the effing place, the cheating, lying people, have been ripped off for millions by hundreds of evil Thai women, but can't quite bring themselves to go back to the Utopian UK, where life was perfect.....hmm, yeah, right!
I've read a few books over the years, self help, novels, and the like, attempting to tell me all I need to know about how to live and survive here intact! Some have been good, some frankly, abysmal, and most mediocre. I even read one written in both languages, 50% aimed at the 'farrang' male, and the other 50% at the Thai female, purporting to give both sides of the relationship divide.
