Could New Bangkok Governor Chatchart Be Disqualified Because of His 'Free Campaign Bags’?

Story and photo by Pravit Rojanaphruk

BANGKOK -- After an activist petitioned the EC last week to disqualify then Bangkok gubernatorial candidate Chatchart Sittipunt for alleged bribery through vinyl campaign posters that can be recycled into bags, messages were hurriedly sent Sunday night,  after it became clear that Chatchart had won, that people should return both the posters and bags to his team ASAP in order to minimise the risk of the governor elect from being disqualified.

Activist Srisuwan Janya petitioned the Election Commission on Wednesday accusing Chatchart of attempting to bribe voters by producing some campaign posters that are made of vinyl that can be reused by turning them into handbags after election.

Srisuwan said these posters even contain marks that guide users to later cut and upcycle them into bags. If found guilty of violating local elections law, Chatchart could be disqualified and banned from politics for 20 years, faced and imprisonment term of between one to 10 years and/or fine between 20,000 to 200,000 baht, said Srisuwan.

The photo was taken on Saturday afternoon at Siam Square.

EC Needs More Time

BANGKOK - The Election Commission announced Tuesday it will take 30 days for Sunday local elections results in Bangkok and Pattaya to be officially certified if there's no irregularity. In case there exist some irregularities, the process could take up to 60 days.
Originally some expect it to be seven days.
Issues that could be considered include the EC insisting that voters must only use blue-colour ballpoint pen to mark the ballot papers and winning Bangkok gubernatorial candidate Chatchart Sittipunt being accused of bribery through his reusable vinyl campaign posters. (KhaosodE)
