Like most travelers in Burma, Norman Lewis fell in love with the land and its people. Although much of the countryside was under the control of insurgent armies-the book was originally published in 1952-he managed, by steamboat, decrepit lorry, and dacoit-besieged train, to travel almost everywhere he wanted. This perseverance enabled him to see brilliant spectacles that are still out of our reach, and to meet all types of Burmese, from District officers to the inmates of Rangoon's jail. All the color, gaiety, and charm of the East spring to life with this master storyteller.

Cultural experience, however much has changed. An Ethnography is a non bias recording or written description of a culture and the people inside that culture. The author Norman Lewis travels into Burma and all around the country in an attempt to capture the culture. He shows minimal bias as all of his thoughts from the novel analyze his written experience; he lets the reader “take it for what it is”. I chose this book, because Lewis’s travels through Burma relate to my ethnography. I would not recommend this book as a travel guide as it was published in 1952. “My ignorance of conditions in Burma was quite extraordinary…In July 1949; the Prime Minister had announced that peace was attainable within a year. Having heard no more I assumed the peace was attained.” The book was originally published 63 years ago; this is significant because so much has changed in Burma since then. Today, even after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Myanmar (what was once Burma) there is still conflict and has been for over sixty years. This book was more intended as a cultural experience in a narrow time slot which the Country received its independence and the government regime wasn’t out of control. However, Lewis did do a terrific job at capturing the culture around him during his travels."Apart from building pagodas, the ancient Burmese seem to have a set of extraordinary store by the act of compelling them. Just in biblical times battles were sometimes decided by individual combat between champions, there are many examples in Burmese history of conflicts being settled without fighting in favor of the side which could first complete a pagoda.". This is a worthwhile book to read in leisure time for pleasure, however should not be recommended as a travel guide.

Robinson surveys a network of settlements—more than 1,000—that covered over 800,000 square kilometers. He examines the technically advanced features of some of the civilization’s ancient cities, such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, where archaeologists have found finely crafted gemstone jewelry, an exquisite part-pictographic writing system (still requiring decipherment), apparently Hindu symbolism, plumbing systems that would not be bettered until the Roman empire, and street planning worthy of our modern world. He also notes what is missing: any evidence of warfare, notwithstanding an adventurous maritime trade between the Indus cities and Mesopotamia via the Persian Gulf.

A fascinating look at a tantalizingly “lost” civilization, this book is a testament to its artistic excellence, technological progress, economic vigor, and social tolerance, not to mention the Indus legacy to modern South Asia and the wider world.

Ein interessantes Buch das in Anbetracht der aktuellen Ereignisse vielleicht eine Neuauflage verdient hätte.
Seit der Tsunami Katastrophe im indischen Ozean ist das Schicksal der Urbevölkerung der Anadamen ungewiß. Die Mitglieder der Stämme: Onche, Jarawer und Sentilesen leben seit Jahrtausenden von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten in einem vor-steinzeitlichen Zustand. Heinrich Harrer und dem belgischen König Leopold III wurde das Privileg zuteil (eine Erlaubis der indischen Regierung ist nötig) mit diesen Menschen - die teilweise noch nie mit der Außenwelt in Berührung gekommen sind - Kontakt aufzunehmen. Die Eindrücke dieser Begegnungen hat Heinirch Harrer in diesem Buch zusammengefaßt. Das Ergebnis ist ein sehr interessanter Reisebericht der ein Zeitfenster zu den Ursprüngen der Menschheitsgeschichte öffnet.

"Rattenkönig" spielt Anfang 1945 im japanischen Kriegsgefangenlager Changi in Singapur. Und das wäre eigentlich für mich Grund genug gewesen, dieses Buch nicht zu lesen. Ich mag diese Geschichten, in denen es nur um Leid, Elend, Grausamkeit und Brutalität geht nicht. Nun bin ich aber ein leidenschaftlicher James-Clavell-Fan und hatte mal bei einem Bucheinkauf ohne auf die Inhalte zu achten einfach alle Bücher von Clavell gekauft. Nachdem mich "Rattenkönig" lange Zeit vom Buchregal ungelesen und daher vorwurfsvoll angeschaut hatte, las ich es dann doch. Und ich stellte fest: Es war anders als ich gedacht hatte! Es war genial!
Im Mittelpunkt steht der britische Fliegerleutnant Peter Marlowe, der sich langsam mit einem amerikanischen Korporal anfreundet, den alle nur ehrfürchtig den 'King' nennen. Der King ist der König des Schwarzmarkthandels im Lager. Er ist ein Einzelgänger, mit dem niemand etwas zu tun haben möchte, dessen Nähe aber gleichzeitig gesucht wird, um möglichst von seinen Profiten auch zu profitieren. Marlowe ist der einzige, der den King ohne Vorurteile nur als Menschen sieht. Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich langsam eine Freundschaft. Der Hintergrund der Geschichte, der Überlebenskampf im Lager, gerät dabei nie in Vergessenheit. Der Kampf un die tägliche Nahrungsration, die völlig unzureichende medizinische Versorgung, das zermürbende Dahinschleichen der Zeit, der innere Kampf gegen die Resignation, die der Anfang von Ende wäre, die Sorge und Ungewißheit über Angehörige und die Alpträume der eigenen Erlebnisse sind immer präsent. Und doch ist es ein Buch, in dem es um das Leben geht. Das Leben, das man sich trotz aller Widrigkeiten einrichtet, mit Lachen und Kartenspiel, mit Theatervorstellungen und Fortbildungskursen, mit (verbotenem) Handel, mit Freundschaften und privaten Fehden.
