Am 5. Juni 1866 startete eine französische Expedition, die sich auf der Suche nach der Quelle des Mekongs begab, um den Wasserweg nach China zu erschließen und den Fluss für die Schifffahrt nutzbar zu machen. Die Expedition misslang; Krankheiten, feindliches Terrain und das subtropische Klima setzen dem Abenteuer ein Ende.

Der Mekong ist mit seinen etwa 4.500 Kilometern der zehnlängste Strom. Er gilt als Lebensader Südostasiens und fließt durch sechs Länder: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Kambodscha und Vietnam.

Bis heute ist nicht festgelegt, wo der eigentliche Ursprung des Mekongs liegt, da dieser aus mehreren Quellflüssen in teils schwer erreichbaren Gebieten des Hochlands von Tibet entsteht. Auch schiffbar ist er noch heute auf mehr als der Hälfte seiner Länge nicht.

Mit Fahrrad, Bus und Boot begleitet Volker Häring den Mekong vom tibetischen Hochland bis in die kambodschanische Tiefebene und erzählt dabei vom Leben entlang des drittgrößten Stroms Asiens. Er trinkt Wein mit in die Jahre gekommenen chinesischen Ministranten, lernt in Laos die Langsamkeit kennen und entdeckt die unbekannten Mekongufer Kambodschas.

Eine Reise entlang des Mekongs ist immer auch eine Reise in Umwegen. Die sind mal rührend, mal traurig, meistens aber heiter – und führen immer zum Ziel: Dem Mythos Mekong näher zu kommen. Ohne falschen Pathos und immer mit einem Schuß Ironie.

I have never seen a tour book put trips together like this before and I can't wait to check out some of the things I have missed in past trips to Bangkok. A companion buy might be the Nelles map of Bangkok because of its stunning attention to detail.

A Thai family came for a one week visit in September. I'm in Japan. The father speaks English. The mother and two young boys speak no English and nobody speaks Japanese. I got an education on what to expect and sure glad I got some tips on manners.
We had lots of laughs on how we communicated using gestures, smiles, eyes and pencils too. The Thai culture is so very respectful toward senior citizens and my wife and I sure fit the description. I did make one very big mistake. They were all out on a Tokyo
tour with my wife. I was home. I put all their dirty clothes in our washing machine. Washed the clothes and used our gas dryer.
Then folded their clothes. They got down on the kitchen floor and kowtowed in gratitude for washing their clothes.
It was a shock to see such humility. I said our house is the USA and they can not feel shame for my manners in my home.
Now we want to visit this family in Thailand. Should be interesting to see what they say if I wash dishes, wash clothes and vacuum the house. I was told it would be an affront to their culture and customs. Maybe we should go and take paper dishes too. Ha!
My advice is don't just read on book on Thai culture but many to get a good perspective of such a wonderful culture.

Unter anderem auch im berüchtigten »Bangkok Hilton«, in dem Gewalt, Schmutz, Krankheit und Wahnsinn regieren. Hinter den hohen Gefängnismauern gibt es keine Menschenrechte, weil ein Leben nichts wert ist. Der direkte und intensive Stil Moores dürfte keinen Leser kalt lassen.

"Moken and Semang" is a new edition of the first part of the Austrian ethnographer and photographer Hugo A. Bernatzik's work "The Spirits of the Yellow Leaves". Bematzik's famous book on minorities in Thailand and beyond was originally published in 1938 and appeared in English translation in 1958. This first part was titled "Mergui and South Thailand". Jacques Ivanoff, a CNRS scholar, who has been studying the Moken for a number of years and written several books on these so-called "sea-gypsies", introduces the present volume with an analysis of Bernatzik's work. He also deals extensively with the situation of the Moken today, sixty years after Bernatzik did his study. Ivanoff describes how the Moken survived the Tsunami of December 2004, explaining how their preservation of traditional knowledge and culture enabled them to understand what happened at sea, before the disaster struck. The second part of Bematzik's work is published separately under its original title, with an introduction about the author and his work by Prof. Jorgen Rischel, who also analyzes Bernatzik's data on the Mlabri language.

The two most extensively documented ethnic groups in Bematzik's work, the sea-based Moken and the jungle dwellers Mlabri, are of Malay and Mon-Khmer affiliation, respectively. Each group occupies a niche away from the mainstream societies, and they have done so for a long time, most likely on their own will.

Trams of Bangkok, Eighty Years 1888-1968, is the first work tracing the history of trams in Bangkok, a pioneering work with Danish and Belgian involvement. Thailand was the second country in Southeast Asia with trams. First, horse-drawn trams appeared in 1888. But as horse-drawn trams were not very suitable in the tropics, they were replaced in 1893 by electric trams. (In that same year, the French attacked Siam in what became known as the Paknam Incident.) The resulting electric tram company, with its own generators, was one of the oldest in Southeast Asia. The Dutch introduced trams in Batavia (Jakarta) in 1869. Singapore followed in July 1905, after having experimented with electric tramways in 1891 and 1892. In 1893, Bangkok had a population of 250,000. The trams became quite popular with the people. The author made new drawings of all the tram lines. He has located the best information available on the electric tram cars, as the archives are poor. In the 1960s, trams became obsolete as buses took over. A renewal program of the rolling stock and new kinds of tram cars came too late. Buses were already duplicating the tram lines. The Thais liked to follow the American model, favoring road traffic over rail traffic. But now, realizing that this is not an ideal solution, Skytrain and subway lines are being built in Bangkok. I picked this book up after reading two of Jake's Sam Tay novels. It is quite a contrast from the urbane, reflective existentialism of Tay to Eddie and Winnebago's adventure in Thailand. But, looking at it as a reader along for the ride, I enjoyed it immensely.

There are quite a few holes in the novel. Eddie's family relationship goes nowhere. His San Francisco backstory isn't very meaningful. Certain sub-plot elements seem to go along a certain path and fizzle. Messy. But, each one of these areas appear ripe for use in future stories. I hope to see Eddie in future adventures as he and his small band of loyalists attempt to spend the money wisely.

There were a few editing errors, but nothing overly disturbing.

I've rated this novel with 5 stars because of it's story and it's potential for future development. I'll probably read the remainder of Jake's novels available on Kindle before I trade off to other authors. The three novels I've read so far are all quite good, with The Big Mango as my favorite to date.
